The current climatic conditions, characterized by remarkably hot and dry summers in large regions of the world wine-growing area, are exerting a decisive influence on the entire vine cultivation. In response to this context, the Instituto Murciano de Desarrollo Agrario y Medioambiental (IMDA), has undertaken a program of genetic improvement of wine grapes through directed crosses between the Monastrell variety with other grape varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Tempranillo, Verdejo and Barberá.
