ENOFORUM ends its fourth Spanish edition with more than a resounding success

Zaragoza, May 20, 2024 – With the participation of more than 700 technicians, including viticulturists, winemakers, companies in the wine sector, scientists, associations, winemakers’ associations and organizers. Enoforum bids farewell until 2026 to return with even greater force perhaps. It once again demonstrates that it is the largest technical-scientific congress held in Spain with a strong international dimension, bringing together scientists from all over the world who have generously contributed their most recent advances to all the technicians who attended the event. Scientific research, vectorized in the form of services and technological tools developed by auxiliary companies, has allowed the congress to put in capital letters, the small “i” of innovation, the undoubted “Core” of Enoforum.

For two days, from May 15 to 16, in Zaragoza, an uninterrupted succession of conferences, round tables, tasting sessions and meetings between professionals of the sector offered unique opportunities to learn about the most recent research work and innovations developed both nationally and internationally, expand knowledge and identify ways of development to respond to the new oenological challenges.

The program included more than 60 presentations on the latest innovations in viticulture and enology, given by around 40 technicians and researchers from universities and public research centers from six different wine-producing countries. It was also an opportunity to learn about the results of 9 important research and innovation projects in viticulture through posters, Flash Talks and dedicated sessions. In addition, 29 leading companies in the sector presented recent innovations resulting from their R&D activity. The sensorial effects of the innovations presented were presented and tasted not only through various tasting sessions but also directly at the stands, where it was possible to exchange ideas and information with the technicians and international experts invited by the companies. An interesting poster area completed this wide range of contents.

“Science is application, if it is not applied it is not innovation. In this edition we have reached a synergy that will bring us important results” said Sergi Ferrer, president of Gienol, in reference to the participation and decisive collaboration of the Spanish enology research group in this edition of Enoforum. Indeed, the joint involvement of public research structures, private R&D organizations, wine companies and industry suppliers is the principle that governs Enoforum, making it a privileged place for the meeting, exchange and debate of wine-related issues among the sector’s stakeholders.

The attendees’ comments reflected the high quality of the event: “Excellent quality of the contents”, “Important presence of leading names in the world of winemaking”, “A unique opportunity to exchange ideas and knowledge in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere”, “Possibility to learn about innovative research and interact with international technicians and researchers”. These testimonials underline the success of Enoforum 2024 as a meeting point for innovation and collaboration in the wine sector.

Indeed, there was a large number of leading names from the world of winemaking who discussed crucial aspects of the world of winemaking and gave key guidelines for the future. According to José Hidalgo “The wine sector is used to crises and technological innovation shortens the time to overcome them”, which complements Pedro Aíbar’s statement “we use more and better technology than ever”, or as Vicente Ferreira believes, “we must work on the definition of wine as a functional product linked to the territory”.

It is worth highlighting the broad involvement in this year’s edition of practically all the Spanish winemakers’ associations, whose leaders played a decisive role in moderating the different sessions of the congress.

Enoforum 2024 was organized by Vinidea in collaboration with Laboratorios Excell Ibérica, sponsored by Simei, with the high patronage of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine and supported by the main Spanish Winemakers’ Associations and by key organizations in the wine industry such as the Plataforma Tecnológica del Vino and Enomaq.

Some recordings of the talks presented at Enoforum 2024, both in Spanish and English, will be available in the coming months in the INFOWINE magazine – Internet Journal of Viticulture and Oenology (www.infowine.com).
